Urban and regional spaces in the early 21st century have been dramatically reshaped by economic performances linked to innovation, knowledge and creativity. Professionals in these sectors, often referred to as the “Creative Class”, are the focus of growing scholarship across the social sciences. Urban geographers, in particular have scrutinized this complex labour category and increasingly question the core spatialities of the concept, including raising awareness of the creative class in rural and peripheral spaces. In this paper, we explore the spatial practices carried out by the creative class in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador—an important yet peripheral urban hub in Atlantic Canada. Drawing upon the findings of interviews with local stakeholders from municipal government; innovation, knowledge and creative industries; and the R&D sector, our analysis points to the existence of a complex and creative “sense of place” that simultaneously envisions a favourable environment for innovation and creativity but that also consistently impedes talent attraction (and retention) from outside the province. Given this context, we highlight two central issues: (i) the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean as an economic and cultural determinant of a “sense of place”; and (ii) the appropriation of this “sense of place” as a spatial practice of the local creative class fed by social and symbolic distinction.

Abstract : This study aims to investigate the connection between the car and the modernist based project that has guided the expansion of cities over the years and still continues to dictate the pace of urban growth, with Florianópolis as a case study. Assuming that the urban space is adapted for the car and realizing that this model has proved unsuccessful, mainly because the city is already saturated and its road structure no longer support the most amount of cars that circulate through it, we have a possible explanation for the occurrence of mass traffic, with few and poor public transport options and lack of investment in cycle paths and walks. This occurs due to a model created by the influence of the automobile - through its political, economic and ideological force - in combination to the modernist way of planning cities, forming what we call the Automobile City

Technical and economic feasibility study for offshore transshipment operation: Case study for the port of Vila do Conde / PA

    Get PDF
Intercontinental cargo transport is carried out mainly through the waterway modal, increasing the number of vessels and the deadweight of ships. This means that onshore ports cannot stand the cargo demands and, to make them competitive in this reality, a very high investment is needed, and their expansion can produce serious environmental impact. Thus, it is necessary to search for alternatives that facilitate the flow of vessels in the regional and world scenario. Hence, the present work conducts a technical and economic feasibility study of a direct offshore transshipment operation of solid bulk cargo of vegetable origin at the Organized Port of Vila do Conde, in Brazil, using the Net Present Value (NPV) methods, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback. In the study, three scenarios were considered, each of which had its particularity related to the operating life and the amount of cargo handled. Therefore, it was noted that offshore transshipment is more viable in two scenarios – the project\u27s useful life is up to 14 years, so that the investment of capital in an onshore installation is more viable. Furthermore, it was found that, only in the worst-case scenario, offshore transshipment overlapped the other activity in any period of its useful life

ANALYSIS OF THE DAILY MOBILITY IN FLORIANÓPOLIS

Towards smart urban developments?:Innovation habitats and tech parks in Brazil

In line with the UN’s global agenda of sustainable development goals (SDG), to achieve a positive transformation towards the sustainability of cities, urban planning practitioners should draw on a series of action plans aimed at combining smart infrastructure to high-density and mixed-use developments. In Brazil, these endeavors are likely to be fostered from the Innovation Habitats – such as tech-parks, coworking spaces, incubators, living labs, etc. –understood as spaces conducive for innovations to occur, as they are the locus of information and knowledge sharing, particularly regarding cutting-edgetechnology development. However, there is limited knowledge on the extent to which innovation habitats cope with smart urban planning. Therefore, thispaper intends to verify this issue through an analysis of the 43 tech parks currently in operation in the country and their integration into respective urbancontexts. The results account for three fronts from which it is possible to reflect on the extent to which these parks play a prominent role in promoting asmarter and more sustainable urban development: (i) their legal personality; (ii) their rapport with the city region; and (iii) their relation with thesurrounding neighborhoods
